The Artists Cemetery
The Artists Cemetery is a permanent public art park in Southern California where artists make sculptures inspired by graves.
The grave is the oldest sculpture commission. For most of human history, the most ambitious sculpture was funerary: the marker, the monument, the mausoleum, the garden, the ruin. This project returns contemporary artists to that commission, without a client, on land that belongs permanently to the public.
Each participating artist is given a plot. What they make there stays.
The Cemetery is currently seeking its land, between Los Angeles and Joshua Tree, or midway on the drive to San Francisco. Admission will always be free.
